HBCU Football Week 6 Chaos: Grambling Stuns Jackson State as FAMU Completes an Incredible Comeback

ScoreClub Sports  /  October 13, 2026

One unforgettable weekend just changed the HBCU football landscape.

Grambling State delivered the weekend’s biggest upset, Florida A&M produced a fourth-quarter comeback for the ages and Southern University returned to the win column. Around the country, ranked teams fell, several games came down to their final possession and the SWAC race was thrown wide open.

Now, a potentially season-altering injury and Saturday’s FAMU–Jackson State showdown headline the week ahead.

Grambling Shocks Jackson State in a 45–38 Thriller

Grambling State and Jackson State traded momentum throughout a wild second half before the Tigers delivered the decisive blow.

Jackson State took a 38–35 lead when Li’Darious Pryor exploded for a 79-yard touchdown with 9:21 remaining. Grambling refused to fold. D’Shaun Ford’s one-yard touchdown run with 1:36 left completed the upset and gave Grambling a stunning 45–38 victory.

Ford’s winning score followed a crucial 30-yard reception through pass interference—one of the defining plays of the weekend.

The result carries serious SWAC championship implications, but Jackson State’s greatest concern may be the health of quarterback Jared Lockhart. The reigning SWAC Freshman of the Year was injured on the final play of the first half and did not return.

Backup Caron Tyler threw two interceptions, including the turnover that sealed the game. Lockhart’s status is now the biggest storyline to monitor before Jackson State hosts FAMU.

The loss also continued an uncomfortable trend: Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor remains winless against Grambling during his four-year tenure.

FAMU Turns Two Deep Strikes Into an Unbelievable Comeback

Florida A&M appeared headed toward a fifth consecutive loss after falling behind Alabama State 27–14 in the fourth quarter.

Then freshman quarterback Armond Parker transformed the game.

After throwing interceptions on consecutive possessions, Parker responded with fearless downfield aggression. He connected with receiver Burris for touchdown strikes of 88 and 89 yards, completely reversing the momentum inside Alabama State’s home stadium.

Parker finished 13-of-20 for 290 yards and three passing touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Burris delivered one of the weekend’s most explosive performances with four receptions for 216 yards.

Alabama State still had an opportunity to escape with the victory, but Johnny Hutton III blocked a potential game-winning 47-yard field goal as time expired. FAMU survived 28–27, spoiled the Hornets’ Homecoming and ended its four-game losing streak.

The Rattlers did more than win—they found new life.

Southern Gets Back on Track

Southern University steadied itself with a 28–14 victory over Prairie View A&M.

After suffering a painful Homecoming loss, the Jaguars needed a response. They delivered one by controlling the game and avoiding the late collapse that had recently haunted them.

Prairie View, meanwhile, suffered another setback following its collapse against Mississippi Valley State. With the SWAC race becoming increasingly unpredictable, Southern’s return to the win column could prove significant.

HBCU Week 6 Scores

The chaos extended far beyond the weekend’s three featured games:

- Alabama A&M 55, Bethune-Cookman 17

- Morgan State 28, Robert Morris 27

- North Carolina A&T 30, New Hampshire 27 in overtime

- Charleston Southern 49, South Carolina State 39

- Mississippi Valley State 38, Texas Southern 34

- Alcorn State 63, Arkansas Baptist 7

- William & Mary 17, North Carolina Central 14

- Penn 24, Howard 20

- Norfolk State 62, Virginia-Lynchburg 0

- Delaware State 34, Franklin Pierce 0

- UT Martin 42, Tennessee State 28

South Carolina State entered the weekend ranked No. 2 before falling to Charleston Southern. Quarterback William Watson III was also forced out following a targeting hit, creating another important injury situation to monitor.

North Carolina A&T survived an overtime battle after Andrew Holland responded to a missed regulation extra point by drilling a 34-yard winning field goal.

Mississippi Valley State continued its impressive surge, while Alabama A&M made one of the weekend’s loudest statements with a 55-point explosion.

What This Weekend Means for the SWAC Race

Grambling’s upset did more than add another win to the standings. It exposed Jackson State’s vulnerability, added uncertainty to the championship race and increased the importance of Lockhart’s injury status.

FAMU enters its next game with renewed confidence and a freshman quarterback who just proved he can recover from major mistakes under pressure.

That creates a compelling setup for Saturday.

Next Up: FAMU at Jackson State

Jackson State must regroup quickly after an emotional defeat. FAMU arrives with momentum, explosive-play confidence and very little to lose.

If Lockhart cannot play, Jackson State could be forced to rely again on Tyler against a Rattlers team suddenly believing it can win anywhere.

FAMU may enter as the underdog—but after what happened in Montgomery, dismissing the Rattlers would be dangerous.

ScoreClub Sports Take

Week 6 reminded everyone why HBCU football deserves the national spotlight.

Grambling disrupted the SWAC race. FAMU delivered an instant classic. Southern stabilized its season. Ranked teams fell, young quarterbacks were tested and the next major showdown is already approaching.

The weekend’s biggest question: Did Grambling make the strongest statement—or did FAMU’s comeback change the direction of its entire season?
